Following in the footsteps of Toronto, the cities of Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor and Hamilton are implementing 2025 Vacant Unit Tax reporting for the 2024 tax year.
In Hamilton, a deadline had been set for March 31, 2025 to submit vacancy status. However, according to the CBC, delays are again imminent due to the Canada Post strike in late 2024. Although the strike was resolved in mid-December, the back log of mail and packages will result in delaying the notices issued to residents.
The City of Hamilton website has January 2025 as the date for online declaration forms to be released to the public. These, however, are not yet available.
Council met today, January 16th, which should mean updates and next steps will be issued shortly.
